Slow fashion
Slow Fashion decelerates the processes in the fashion industry

In contrast to fast fashion, fewer collections are produced. This ensures that resource-conserving sustainable materials are used and working conditions are improved. Slow Fashion exhibits the following characteristics:
- Sustainable and high quality materials
- Fewer annual collections
- Fairer, transparent working conditions

"Slow is not the opposite of fast – there is no dualism – but a different approach in which designers, buyers, retailers and consumers are more aware of the impacts of products on workers, communities and ecosystems of people."
– Kate Fletcher
6 tips to implement slow fashion
“The most sustainable piece of clothing is the one you never bought”.
The fast fashion fashion industry puts more emphasis on getting the latest collections into stores as quickly as possible than producing sustainable and durable clothes.

01
Clean out your closet before buying new clothes
The first step to a more sustainable approach to fashion is to sort out your existing closet.
Take another look at each piece of clothing and decide if you still want to keep it. Sometimes you will discover a new, completely forgotten piece of clothing.
Ask yourself these questions to decide whether to keep a garment or give it away:
- How often was it worn?
- Do you really like it?
Anything you no longer want to wear – will be given away, sold or donated.

02
Care for your clothes properly
Did you know that one third of the carbon footprint in the life of a garment is created during the use phase? Your washing behavior saves energy and reduces the footprint even further during the use phase of a garment:
- Therefore, avoid using a tumble dryer whenever possible
- Also reduce the washing temperature to 20 to 30 degrees, most detergents wash clean with that
- Do not use detergents with synthetic polymers or in gel form to reduce plastic
- Completely abandon highly toxic fabric softener

03
Repair your clothes
Don’t throw away a broken piece of clothing right away:
- Have it repaired by a tailor store
- Go to a Repair Café or a sewing shop to offer support for mending yourself
- Watch a Youtube tutorial or take part in a sewing workshop to mend your clothes yourself
04
Buy second-hand clothes, prolong their life
The longer a garment is worn, the fewer new ones need to be produced. Therefore, wear your clothes as long as possible.
- Buy second hand fashion on platforms like
– https://secondklick.ch/
– https://myprivateboutique.ch - For special occasions like weddings, graduation ceremonies etc, rent your clothes or borrow them from other people
- Donate clothes you no longer need to charities, flea markets or sell them on online platforms
- Swap your clothes on online swap forums or organize a local clothes swap
- If you don’t want to wear something yourself anymore, you can donate it to charity, sell it at flea markets or on online platforms

05
Recycle your clothes
Even if clothes break down and can’t be repaired, you don’t have to throw them in the trash:
- Drop them off at used clothing collection centers; these companies are experts at recycling.
- They will determine if your garment will be partially recycled or if it will be sent to be used as an insulating material in the construction sector, among other things.
06
Conscious clothes shopping
Don’t buy fast fashion but quality basics from responsible producers. Pay attention to labels and the observed environmental standards and compliance with human and labor rights. Choose sustainable organic cotton and other sustainable materials.
Besides materials like Modal and Tencel, many innovative projects have been implemented. Also, interesting ideas are constantly being produced from “waste products” of the following materials:
- Pineapple and banana leaves
- Coffee grounds
- Orange peels and grape skins
