The value of natural cosmetics

Wood

What exactly does natural cosmetics mean? This generally means that natural and nature-based raw materials are used. For example, vegetable oils and extracts, but also substances derived from natural raw materials such as sugar. Synthetic ingredients such as silicones, microplastics, etc. are completely avoided during production.

When it comes to natural cosmetics, we often include organic cosmetics.

However, there are still differences here:

  • Certified organic cosmetic products have a much higher proportion of ingredients from certified organic cultivation than natural or conventional cosmetics, for example.
  • They must also be produced in a way that protects the environment and conserves resources.
  • The packaging must be made of recyclable materials and used as sparingly and environmentally consciously as possible.

Certified organic cosmetics

  • 95% of the ingredients must be of natural origin
  • 95% of the plant-based ingredients must have been grown organically
  • 10% of the entire product must consist of certified organic raw materials

Certified natural cosmetics

  • At least 50% (instead of 95%) of the plant-based ingredients must be organic
  • At least 5 % (instead of 10 %) of the total ingredients must consist of certified organic raw materials.

Certified natural cosmetics do contain organic ingredients. However, these are significantly lower than in organic cosmetics.

In the case of natural cosmetics products, there are stricter bans on animal testing than those prescribed by law. However, these tests have not yet been completely ruled out. However, many natural cosmetics manufacturers strive to do as little animal testing as possible.

But be careful, natural cosmetics is not a protected term and can be used by anyone! So that you can be sure that this product was also produced under the conditions of natural cosmetics, it is best to look for the natural cosmetics seals. The most common seals of approval are Natrue, BDIH, The Vegan Society und Cosmos. Some of these seals of approval allow laboratory-generated ingredients. These ingredients are called nature-identical ingredients. Basically, these substances occur in nature but only in very small quantities. Therefore, they are reproduced in the laboratory to meet the demand. These include, for example, minerals, pigments or many preservatives. Natrue and BDIH for example, state that they allow nature-identical ingredients.

Also, certain companies use the term organic or natural cosmetics to be able to charge more money for their own products. Not everything that looks like nature is really natural. If you are not sure if you have the right product, check it for one of the cosmetic seals, if you don’t find one, inform yourself before you buy the product. These 3 apps will also help you:
