Household cleaners

These 7 cleaners are unnecessary and can be replaced

Wood

Did you know that modern homes are full of highly toxic chemicals? Actually, you should steer clear of these. However, the advertising wants to make you believe that all of these problematic substances are necessary for a clean household.

There are obvious poisons such as aggressive cleaning agents, solvents, pesticides, etc. When using everyday products, we come into contact with many harmful substances that are unknown to us . These are deposited in the body for a long time and can pose a long-term threat to our health . For example, the hormone toxin bisphenol A (BPA) is found not only in plastic, but also in products in which you would not suspect it:

01

Drain cleaner

Problem:

A blocked drain can be cleared in seconds with an expensive drain cleaner. However, nowhere is it mentioned that these are extremely corrosive and aggressive. The sodium hydroxide it contains is not only extremely toxic to all aquatic organisms, but the vapors produced are also extremely harmful to health.

Solution:

Use a stainless steel strainer to keep hair out of the drain. Use hot water to dissolve grease and soap residue in the drain. If a blockage does occur, you can clear it as follows: First add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the drain in question and then immediately pour in half a cup of vinegar. It should now start to fizz, and when it stops fizzing, flush with hot water.

02

All-purpose cleaner

Problem:

Many purchased all-purpose cleaners have a variety of chemicals in them. When you clean, you comeinto contact with them via vapors or via skin (the largest and heaviest organ in your body). In the long term they are harmful to health.

Solution:

To make your own all-purpose cleaner, you will need squeezed (organic) lemon peel and white household vinegar. Place the lemon peel in a mason jar and fill it completely with the vinegar until the peel is completely covered. As or a mixture of both peels can be used. The whole thing then has to rest in the preserving jar for two weeks. The bowls must always be completely covered so that they do not start to mold. After a good two weeks you can pour your all-purpose cleaner into a glass spray bottle and it is now ready for use.

03

Window cleaner

Problem:

When cleaning windows, you spray the spray directly at the level of your face. Nevertheless, you probably don’t even think about what you’re breathing in. However, purchased cleaners contain many questionable and harmful ingredients and these should be avoided. You also promote problematic plastic waste with the plastic bottle.

Solution:

It’s better to make your own window cleaner . To do this, squeeze 2 (organic) lemons and fill this juice into your glass spray bottle. Now add 250 ml water and 250 ml vinegar. Now shake the bottle so that the contents mix well and let it stand for a while before use. Now you can clean your windows as usual. Just pay attention to the window seals and do not spray them with the lemon mixture, as the citric acid would attack them. Simply wipe with a wet cloth if you accidentally get some spray on it.

04

Stain remover

Problem:

Advertising likes to praise universal stain removers that are full of chemicals.

Solution:

However, there is no universal household remedy for stain removal. There is a different solution for every stain. Red wine, grease, coffee or vegetable stains can be easily removed with baking powder. As long as the stain is wet, immediately pour baking soda on it and leave to work for at least 30 minutes. Tap out the residue. You can then wash your fabric as usual. For dry stains, you can mix baking soda and water to make a paste and then apply this to the stain. Allow to absorb well, then rinse out and wash the garment as usual. Sweat stains and yellowing are best soaked in a solution of two sachets of baking soda and water. Drizzle pure vinegar essence over deodorant stains, make-up, ballpoint pen stains and grass stains and leave to work. Then remove the stains with a dry cloth and wash the garment warm according to the instructions.

05

Limescale remover

Problem:

Advertisements make you believe that limescale stains can only be removed effortlessly with their miracle products. Unfortunately, these sprays and products are full of problematic chemical additives. You absorb these into your body via your skin or spray mist. In addition, plastic waste is produced with every new bottle.

Solution:

To make your own ecological limescale remover, you need two (organic) lemons, some liquid hand soap and a glass spray bottle. Squeeze the lemon and add a little soap. Pour the mixture into the spray bottle and you have your own limescale remover.

06

Dishwasher tabs

Problem:

Store-bought dishwasher tablets contain a whole cocktail of problematic chemical ingredients. Normally, you would never let these chemicals get near your dishes, as they also contain petroleum-based ingredients or even genetically modified enzymes. An unappetizing story. Using the tablets also generates unnecessary micro- and nanoplastic waste.

Solution:

To make your own washing-up liquid, you need citric acid, soda, baking soda, ready-made dishwasher salt and a preserving jar. Pour 125g of this salt together with 300g each of soda and baking soda into the preserving jar. This is perfect for storing. However, the whole thing must remain dry, otherwise it will react immediately with the citric acid. Use a small spoon to measure out the required powder correctly according to the indicator in the powder compartment of your dishwasher.

07

WC cleaning agent

Problem:

Purchased toilet cleaners are often full of dubious chemicals that not only endanger our environment, but also your health.

Solution:

It’s better to make your own cleaning agent. You will need 60 g of baking soda, 240 milliliters of vinegar essence and half a teaspoon of essential oil. Mix these ingredients together and pour them into your glass spray bottle. Spray the entire toilet and leave the solution to work for a few minutes. With this cleaning agent, you can also do without chemical additives and the essential oil provides a wonderfully fresh scent.
