The PEFC label (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) has its origins in Europe and was initiated by the timber industry in 1999. It is a voluntary labeling system based on consensus with the main interest groups that pursue the idea of sustainable forest management at national and regional level. It stands for an economically sensible, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable use of the forest in accordance with the Helsinki criteria (resolution of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe).
